The Story of Satish Kale and Golf in Nagpur

Authored by Shri. Vikram Naidu

One of the most prominent and iconic names in Nagpur’s golfing fraternity is Satish Kale — a towering personality whose passion and commitment played a pivotal role in shaping the game of golf in the region.

Satish Kale began playing golf in the early 1990s along with close friends Sudhir Bhiwapurkar and Behram Patel. From the very beginning, his love for the sport went far beyond personal play. He took it upon himself to unite golfers, revive dormant courses, and build a thriving golfing community in and around Nagpur.

Along with Col. Bisla, Satish was instrumental in reviving golf at the Garuda Golf Course, Kamptee. At the AKSC course, located adjacent to the present Air Force Command House, he ensured that the sand greens were well maintained and playable — especially critical for putting conditions in those days.

Several like-minded individuals joined Satish in promoting the sport. Notable among them were Shiv Daga, Ashok Daga, Suneet Rai, Anand Rai, Anil (Poomi) Taneja, Navin Rekhi, Bharat Parikh, Govindlal Agrawal, Arvind Goenka, and many others. Women golfers too were encouraged and supported, with Usha Satish Kale, Archana Patel, and Neena Parikh being among the early lady golfers of the region.

Satish’s dedication was unmatched. He would arrange a bus to transport caddies and often used his own car to pick up golfers for tournaments — ensuring maximum participation and camaraderie.

The golfing season in Nagpur became vibrant with a series of tournaments such as the Tiger Cup, Rai Cup, Daga Cup, Field Cup, ITC Cup, Goenka Cup, Miltech Cup, MHKS Cup, Baidyanath Cup, culminating with the prestigious Garuda Cup at Kamptee. The AKSC course too was active, hosting Monthly Medal Rounds, Air Force Day Tournaments, the C-in-C Cup, and more.

In 1993–94, Satish Kale founded the Vidarbha Golf Association (VGA), a landmark step that gave organized structure to golf in the region. Through the VGA, many new golfers were introduced to the game, including Suresh Sharma, Kumar Kale, Vikram Naidu, Tejinder (Bobby) Renu, Yoginder (Yogi) Mohan Singh, Dinesh Agrawal, among several others.

Over the years, the VGA has consistently conducted tournaments, coaching clinics, and golf training workshops, keeping the spirit of the game alive in Vidarbha.

Satish Kale’s legacy continues through his younger son Gautam Kale, himself a keen golfer, who carries forward his father’s vision by organizing the Satish Kale Memorial Golf Cup every year — a fitting tribute to a man who laid the foundation of modern golf in Nagpur. Rajveer, his grandson, is an upcoming golfer in Nagpur.

Satish Kale’s contribution to golf was not merely about the sport — it was about community, mentorship, and passion. His name remains etched forever in the history of Nagpur golf.
