Chipping and Pitching

Deceivingly Simple, mastered through practice.

Basics of Chipping and Pitching

Chipping and pitching are essential short game techniques in golf that can significantly impact a player's overall performance. Both shots are used to move the ball closer to the hole when it's too far for putting, but too close for a full swing.

Chipping

Chipping involves a low, controlled shot that travels mostly along the ground, typically used when just off the green.

Pitching

Pitching, on the other hand, is a higher, softer shot that carries more through the air and stops quickly upon landing, ideal for approaching the green from a longer distance or over obstacles. Mastering these skills is crucial for lowering scores and improving consistency around the green.

Three Releases

There are three releases to help your chipping and pitching.

Pitching vs. Chipping

In golf, understanding the difference between pitching and chipping is key to improving your short game. While both shots are used to get the ball closer to the hole from off the green, they serve different purposes and require different techniques. Chipping is a low, quick shot that rolls more than it flies, best used when there's little between you and the hole. Pitching, on the other hand, is a higher, softer shot that flies more and rolls less, making it ideal for clearing obstacles or landing softly on the green. Knowing when and how to use each shot can make a significant difference in your scoring and overall confidence around the greens.
